NEW PLAYER AT THE TABLE: WHEN THE DEALER CHANGES THE GAME MID-HAND
COACHING CORNER
"I've been thinking," Sven said during what had appeared to be a routine meeting, his tone deliberately casual. "Dale Heffron has expressed interest in returning to the club in a coordinator role."
The suggestion came at a calculated moment – just as we'd begun proving my system worked. With three wins against Cologne, Lübeck, and Elmshorn (our only loss coming against Hamburg), we had established legitimate momentum. This was precisely when Sven chose to introduce a destabilizing element.
What makes this move so masterful in organizational politics is its apparent reasonableness. Who could object to adding experienced coaching help? Yet beneath this surface logic lay a sophisticated power play – reintroducing a competing philosophy at the exact moment mine was proving successful.
In coaching, as in poker, the most dangerous moves aren't always the most obvious ones. Sometimes, the player across the table slides a single chip forward so casually that you barely notice the bet has been raised. Sven had just pushed forward such a chip – one that would fundamentally alter my coaching tenure's dynamics.
The challenge wasn't just managing a new staff member but navigating a deliberate attempt to create parallel power structures within my own program. Dale wasn't joining to supplement my vision; he was positioned as an alternative to it.
CHAPTER PREVIEWS (KAPITELEINBLICK)
BOOK EXCERPT
"I've been thinking," Sven said during what had appeared to be a routine meeting about upcoming opponents, his tone deliberately casual. "Dale Heffron has expressed interest in returning to the club in a coordinator role. I believe his experience would be valuable, particularly with the offensive unit."
